Textbook Rental
Our textbook rental program makes textbooks more affordable for you.
  • Q: How does the rental program work?
  • It's easy. You can check out which textbooks are available for rent this semester below. You then come into the store and select your desired textbook. To secure your rental, you will be asked for some personal information as well as a driver's license or state ID and a credit card that does not expire prior to your return date. At the end of the rental period, you return the book to the bookstore.
  • Q: Why should I rent from the bookstore versus going online?
  • The bookstore offers many advantages to you versus renting your textbook online including:
    • You receive competitive pricing – online is not necessarily a better price.
    • You are assured the correct book based on the order received directly from the instructor.
    • You do not have to wait for the book to be shipped to you.
    • You do not have to pay shipping to receive or return the book.
    • You will receive top-notch customer service.
  • Q: What if I don’t return the book?
  • If the book is not returned, your credit or debit account will be charged accordingly.
  • Q: What if I decide I want to keep the book and use it for future reference?
  • If you decide to keep the book, your credit or debit account will be charged accordingly.
  • Q: Why are not all books available for rental in the store?
  • In order for a rental program to be successful, the textbook needs to be used for multiple terms. We have selected the textbooks which we are assured will be reused next term either on our campus or elsewhere in the country.
  • Q: Is renting the textbook a better deal than purchasing it?
  • We offer you the option of purchasing the textbook new or used or renting it. It is up to you to decide which option best meets your educational needs.
  • Q: What if I drop the class or don’t need the book once the course begins?
  • Our textbook rental program follows the same return policy as purchasing the textbook. See our policy below for details.
  • Q: Why do you need a credit or debit card now? Is it charged when I pick up the book?
  • The only charge associated with renting the textbook is the rental fee. Your card is not charged for any additional fees unless the book is not returned. We require you to use a credit or debit card to ensure that the textbook is returned.

Rental Policy
Any book rented is the property of College Textbooks, Inc. and the renter accepts responsibility to use the book and then return it to College Textbooks, Inc. by the rental due date in resalable condition. If the book is damaged and not in resalable condition, as determined by the bookstore, the renter will pay the replacement price of the book. "Resalable condition" means a book that shows normal signs of wear, has no liquid damage, is clean and has a sound binding with covers and all pages intact. Limited highlighting is acceptable, but no writing or underlining is allowed. There is a 7 day period from the first day rented (printed on rental receipt) to examine the textbook for any signs of damage or writing. If any is found, the book may be returned for a replacement within the first 7 days or the renter is responsible for the book at the end of the rental period. If the book is lost, damaged, or returned without the serial numbers or different serial numbers that were rented, or the stickers are tampered with, or if the book is stolen, the renter is responsible for paying the full replacement cost of the book. To be properly credited, all CD's, DVD's and any other supplemental materials originally included with the textbook must be returned at the same time as the textbook and must be in undamaged condition. Rental textbooks cannot be sold back to textbook buyback service or returned to the Harper College Bookstore. Proper credit will not be received and the credit card on file will be charged for the new retail price of the textbook less any rental fee paid plus any applicable sales tax. The following fees will be assessed if the book is not returned by the rental due date: A book returned 1 to 5 business days after the due date will be charged $10.00 per book rental. A book returned 6 business days after the rental due date will be charged the replacement value equal to the new retail price of the textbook less any rental fee paid plus any applicable sales tax.
